In the summer of 2021, Western and Central Europe was the scene of a natural disaster with severe flash floods or flooding in several river basins due to an unusual weather situation. In Germany, especially in the district of Ahrweiler ("Ahrtal"), the flood was the most severe natural disaster in terms of the number of victims (186 people) since the storm surge of 1962. The total damage is currently (as of January 2022) estimated at approx. 46 billion euros.
